Introduction of robotic welding to a predominate manual welding process

Kingspan

A machine in a warehouse with a conveyor belt.

Initial Challenge:

Introduction of robotic welding to a predominate manual welding process plus create a cell to suit the existing site layout for material flow.

Complexities in the project:

The variations in product scale variations to be completed within the cell added to the complexity of the fixturing required. The welding process suited to performing the required result was an initial challenge but was enhanced further within the production environment and with volume runs. Creating a safe working environment that allows for the flow of materials within the cell plus considering external operation factors and the proximity of other working staff.

The Solution:

Robot – Kuka KR8 R2100 arc HW

Positioner – Kuka KL250-3 1CA – 8m span Kuka KP! HC750/KP1 HC1000

Control – Beckhoff Interface and Safety structure

Weld Power Source – Fronius TPS 400i

Software – Delfoi (Visual Components)

Fixturing – Prefabricated single support grid with separate bolt-on product jigs
